Project Adventure and Speed Stacking (March 12 - April 13)
Project Adventure is a cooperative skills and strength building unit in which students will attempt to perform unfamiliar or challenging activities, and work together in large and small groups to achieve one specific goal.

Students will:
  • Practice climbing skills on ropes and multi-stage ladders
  • Practice swinging skills on ropes and low bars
  • Build upper body strength by pulling up on ropes and other vertical equipment
  • Work cooperatively with peers to solve simple problems and puzzles
Speed Stacking - This activity requires a great deal of cross-brain involvement and is extremely helpful with fine motor patterns, eye-hand coordination and sequencing. With continued practice, students will eventually increase their ambidexterity, speed and concentration, strengthening the pathways in the brain that are also needed in math ability. The goal of this unit is for students to be able to perform the sequence, with reasonable speed and accuracy on a consistent basis. Lessons involve a variety of games and activities that involve stacking at various stages and regularly incorporate fitness.

Students will:
  • Practice “walking” a 3-stack of cups
  • Review “upstacking” and “downstacking” a basic 3 and 3-3pattern
  • Learn to “upstack” and “downstack” a basic 6 pattern
  • Learn to “upstack” and “downstack” a 3-3-3-3 pattern
  • Explore “upstacking” and “downstacking” of a 6-6 pattern
  • Play fitness games such as “Builders and Bulldozers” that have Speed Stacking as their foundation.

Gymnastics (Feb 5 - Mar 9)
Gymnastics in Grade 2 centres around improving body control and core strength as students learn to rotate their bodies through space and around its own axis. Students also do this through supporting their own and another's body weight with different balance activities.

Fitness, Games & Track (Jan 18 – Feb 2)
Students will focus on a variety of fitness games that encourage regular and fun physical activity. They will also start to learn to pace themselves to be able to jog a prescribed distance comfortably without walking. Grade 1 will also be introduced to track and field. By the end of the unit students will:

  • Work cooperatively with a group when playing games
  • Be able to maintain a slow, but steady, jogging pace over a distance of ½ mile
  • Recognize a difference in breathing and heart rate before, during and after physical activity
  • Maintain an appropriate level of continuous physical activity
  • Successfully run a shuttle relay race
  • Take off in to the long jump pit with one foot and land in the long jump pit on two

Outdoor Ball Skills (Nov 13 - Dec 15)

Student will focus on a variety of ball and object manipulation skills. They will work in stations and small groups to increase individual practice on throwing and catching, kicking and striking, ball control and object manipulation. Students will also play a variety of modified games. Developing good hand-eye and foot-eye coordination is central to improving ball skills and by the end of the unit students should demonstrate an intermediate level of skill in:

  • Throwing underhand and overhand
  • Catching with a glove
  • Throwing and catching with a short-handled implement
  • Kicking at a stationary target or to a person
  • Throwing at stationary target or to a person
