Swimming (April 23rd – 1st June)

In grade 5 swimming students are divided into ability groups with each level building on the skills of the previous one.  Students in grade 5 are divided into levels   3 and 4 with some level 2, 5 and 6.

Level 3
  • Stroke development – front and back crawl
  • Introduction to butterfly body motion
  • Introduction to elementary backstroke and breaststroke kick
  • Treading water
  • Reach and assist
  • Diving
Level 4
  • Stroke improvement – front and back crawl
  • Elementary backstroke
  • Introduction to breaststroke and butterfly arms
  • Surface diving
  • Turns
  • Treading water
  • Throw and assist
  • Survival swimming
Level 5
  • Stroke refinement – front and back crawl, breaststroke, butterfly, elementary backstroke
  • Flip turns
  • Surface diving
  • Self rescue skills
  • Basic rescue breathing and caring for a victim

Grade 5 students are expected to be able to change their clothes in the allotted 5 minutes.  Please ensure that they wear easy to take off and put on clothing and shoes.  Please remember no flip flops are allowed on campus.
Project Adventure and Speed Stacking (March 12 - April 13)

Project Adventure is a cooperative skills and strength building unit in which students will engage in a variety of challenging activities, and work together in large and small groups to achieve specific goals.

Students will:
  • Continue to improve climbing skills on ropes and multi-stage ladders
  • Continue to improve swinging skills on ropes and mid-level height bars
  • Build upper body strength by pulling up on, and climbing, ropes and other vertical equipment
  • Challenge themselves to reach higher heights
  • Work cooperatively with peers to solve increasingly difficult problems and puzzles

Speed Stacking - This activity requires a great deal of cross-brain involvement and is extremely helpful with fine motor patterns, eye-hand coordination and sequencing. With continued practice, students will eventually increase their ambidexterity, speed and concentration, strengthening the pathways in the brain that are also needed in math ability. The goal of this unit is for students to be able to perform the sequence, with reasonable speed and accuracy on a consistent basis. Lessons involve a variety of games and activities that involve stacking at various stages and regularly incorporate fitness.

Students will:
  • Review  “upstacking” and “downstacking” the basic 6, 3-3-3-3 and 6-6 patterns
  • Practice “upstacking” and “downstacking” a 3-6-3 and a 3-6-3 into a 6-6 pattern.
  • Learn to “upstack” and “downstack” a 1-10-1.
  • Learn the full stacking sequence.
  • Practice the speed drill for 12 cups with partners.
  • Play fitness games that have Speed Stacking as their foundation.
  • Play table races that increase speed and accuracy
Gymnastics (Feb 5 -Mar 9)

Gymnastics in Grade 5 is designed to tap into students' creative abilities as well as their physical skills as they are required to build a gymnastics routine of their own design. The expectation of the final routine is that a variety of movements and gymnastics elements are incorporated together and class time is used to perfect their routine for a final presentation in front of their class and PE teacher. The performance is a video assessment evaluated with a skills rubric and a student self-reflection.

Fitness, Games & Track (Jan 18 – Feb 2)

Students will focus on a variety of fitness games that encourage regular and fun physical activity. They will also learn to pace themselves to be able to jog a prescribed distance comfortably without walking. Grade 5 will also be introduced to track and field. By the end of the unit students will:

  • Work cooperatively with a group when playing games
  • Be able to discuss the difference in breathing and heart rate before, during and after physical activity
  • Find and monitor their resting and active heartrate
  • Maintain an appropriate level of continuous physical activity
  • Maintain a slow, but steady, jogging pace over a distance of 1 mile
  • Set goals for their mile runs and demonstrate improvement between their first and second mile attempts
  • Complete an online self-assessment of their mile and overall fitness level
  • Be able to demonstrate the basic concepts of relays, discus and long jump.

Outdoor Ball Skills (Nov 13 - Dec 15)



Students will focus on a variety of ball and object manipulation skills. They will work individually and small groups to improve skills in throwing and catching, kicking and striking, ball control and object manipulation. Students will play a variety of lead-up games. Developing good hand-eye and foot-eye coordination is central to improving ball skills and by the end of the unit students should demonstrate a mature level of skill in:


  • Throwing underhand and overhand
  • Throwing and catching with a short-handled implement
  • Kicking at a moving target or person
  • Throwing at moving target or person
  • Striking with a long-handled implement
  • Moving in free and restricted space
  • Understanding basic game strategy and rules

Indoor Ball Skills (Oct 9 – Nov 10)
